What is emotional health?

To be emotionally healthy, individuals need to ensure they are making the most of their emotional functioning. The overall state of well-being relies on the ability to recognise emotions, understand and manage them effectively.

Emotional functioning consists of emotional awareness, emotional regulation, resilience, positive relationships, self-esteem, emotional expression, emotional flexibility, and fulfillment in life.

The ability to recognise and identify one’s own emotions as well as the emotions of others underpins the capacity to manage and regulate emotions in a healthy and adaptive manner.

Coping with stress, anxiety, anger, sadness, and other emotional experiences along the way sometimes requires support. In order to reduce being overwhelmed by difficult experiences, we need to build resilience: Taking the time to work through difficult emotions and develop the ability to bounce back from setbacks, adversity, or trauma helps individuals adapt to change, cope with challenges, and maintain a sense of well-being in the face of adversity. This is a factor in emotional flexibility.

Emotional health is supported by a positive self-concept and a sense of self-worth. This involves accepting one’s strengths, weaknesses, and imperfections, then developing confidence in one’s abilities and value as a person. These all take time and effort, and if we haven’t yet learnt various aspects of positive self-concept, it requires the right help…usually with teachers, therapists, coaches, parents, friends, partners, and significant other relationships in our lives.

Additionally, being able to express emotions appropriately and assertively is important for emotional health. This involves communicating feelings honestly and openly while respecting the boundaries of others.

Another aspect of emotional health, is that it is closely linked to overall life satisfaction and a sense of fulfillment. This involves pursuing meaningful goals, engaging in activities that bring joy and satisfaction, and experiencing a sense of purpose and meaning in life.
