What does “evidence-based psychotherapy” mean?

For the purposes of this discussion, evidence-based therapies can be considered as modalities which have proven success in treating specific mental health conditions. A significant amount of scientific research supports reported clinical experience, and patient preferences, in producing effective outcomes for treatment.

Key features of evidence-based psychotherapy are generally accepted as being tailored treatment for the unique requirements of each client, having regular evaluations on client progress, focusing on specific mental health disorders – for example: post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and ethical guidelines are maintained professionally by the qualified practitioner.

Some evidence-based therapies include (and not limited to):

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • Applied Behaviour Analysis
  • Behaviour Therapy
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
  • Emotionally Focused Therapy
  • Exposure Therapy
  • Family Therapy
  • Integrative Psychotherapy
  • Interpersonal Psychotherapy
  • Motivational Interviewing
  • Person-Centred Therapy
  • Systemic Therapy

This is not a complete list of all evidence-based psychotherapies. In future articles I will cover more details about this list, and provide more insight into other evidence-based therapies too.
