Psychotherapy helps heart health by supporting emotional wellbeing and providing social support

While psychotherapy doesn’t directly treat physical heart conditions, it can contribute significantly to overall cardiovascular health by addressing psychological and behavioural factors that influence heart disease risk. It’s often used as part of a comprehensive approach to managing heart health alongside medical interventions, lifestyle modifications, and other treatments.

Psychotherapy can help heart health by addressing psychological factors that contribute to cardiovascular issues which are related to emotional wellbeing and providing social support.

Addressing underlying emotional issues like depression, anxiety, or unresolved trauma can improve overall psychological wellbeing. The American Heart Association has documented research which suggests that individuals with depression and anxiety (along with stress) are at a higher risk of developing heart disease (Depression, Anxiety and Stress Linked to Poor Heart Health in Two New Studies, n.d.). By treating these conditions, psychotherapy may indirectly benefit heart health.

Depression, anxiety and stress are complex, but not impossible to work on. Often people need support to get started and to stay on track with their personal development.

Psychotherapy can provide a supportive environment where individuals can discuss their concerns, strengthen relationships, and develop coping strategies. A robust support network is linked to better cardiovascular outcomes as it buffers against the negative effects of stress. Another factor influencing heart heath, which I discuss in another article, is loneliness. Social support can help greatly with reducing negative effects of loneliness. Loneliness is an issue many different people face and often don’t know how to resolve it.

Considering emotional wellbeing and social support are vital parts of heart health, it is imperative that people with heart issues get help from a qualified therapist as soon as possible.
